PUBLIC LECTURE MARCH 6 Life as Différance: Problematizing the Concept of Species Talk by Dr Marija Grech at LC 216, University of Malta at 18:00. Dr Grech's paper reads Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species alongside the essay 'Différance' to examine Derrida's claim that 'there is differance […] as soon as there is a living trace […] as soon as there is something living' (For What Tomorrow…). The paper uses Darwin's discussions of the notions of origin and species to argue that the evolution of life may be read as a movement of repetition and variation, difference and deferral, comparable to the play of différance that Derrida outlines in his analysis of language. The lecture forms part of the English Seminar Series. WHAT'S ON The latest in Melitensia from BDL Books A taste of some of the latest releases from the BDL stable A Man of Cultural Achievements: Essays in Honour of Joseph Attard Tabone (ed. Joe Sultana) Joseph Attard Tabone FSA, a historian from Xagħra, is known for discovering a number of Archaeological sites, including the rediscovery of the iconic Brocktorff Circle. He was always at the forefront of safeguarding heritage sites. In 1961 he founded the Xagħra Cultural Centre, and in 1962 he co-founded the Malta Ornithological Society, now BirdLife Malta. The essays in this publication treat a diversity of interesting historical and environmental topics, and were specifically written in honour of his 80th birthday. In his essay Judge Emeritus Giovanni Bonello rightly asserts that "the name of Joseph Attard Tabone links naturally with several cultural achievements." Rituals For Our Safety at Blitz, Valletta
