maltatoday, SUNDAY, 5 MARCH 2017 Events 44 Vodafone leads in 4G roaming survey Excellent turnout for the Equity Investment Seminar organised by Calamatta Cuschieri Vodafone is the world's best car- rier for 4G roaming, offering significantly more 4G roaming destinations than any other op- erator, a report from independent research firm Ovum has found. According to the study, Voda- fone Malta is the only provider and clear leader in Malta, pro- viding 4G international roaming to 65 destinations. The countries range from Germany, France, Switzerland and the United Kingdom to Australia, the Unit- ed Arab Emirates, Brazil, Thai- land and South Africa. The other local operators do not offer 4G services while roam- ing. Simply put, roaming enables mobile customers to use their phones while abroad without buying a subscription to a local service or relying on Wi-Fi. Many operators have already launched 4G for domestic use but, at present, not all have made the investment required to en- able roaming. Before customers can enjoy super-fast data abroad, their mo- bile providers need to enable 4G roaming, destination by desti- nation, network by network. As a result, 4G roaming footprints vary significantly by operator. The study also found that Voda- fone is the global industry leader in 4G roaming, leading in all 18 markets analysed. In most of them, Vodafone offers over 100 4G roaming destinations – more than double the number when compared with other operators in those markets. GreenPak collects the majority of recyclable waste in Malta and Gozo Official figures published this week for 2015 show that Green- Pak Cooperative Society was re- sponsible for 74% of all household collections of recyclables waste. GreenPak collected 10,973 tonnes of household separated waste (HSW) in the green bags the coop gives out freely. To date more than 16.5 million green bags have been given out to support the recyclable collections run every Tuesdays and – in some localities – also on other days. In 2015, according to the National Statitics Office (NSO), HSW col- lections amounted to over 14,926 tonnes. Latest figures confirm that GreenPak registered a further in- crease in glass collection. In 2015, it collected 2,340 tonnes of glass, while according to NSO the to- tal glass collections amounted to 3,538 tonnes. GreenPak also col- lected another 2,129 tonnes of re- cyclable waste from bring-in sites, which according to NSO figures was 80% of the total amount col- lected from these sites. 11.5 million bottle caps plastic bottle caps were diverted from the landfills in Malta and exported by GreenPak for recycling, resulting in more than 36 tonnes, collected through "Nirriċikla għall-Istrina 2015" Campaign. Ing Mario Schembri, Green- Pak's CEO said that, year on year, the cooperative had shown a remarkable increase in terms of waste recovery. "In each locality served by GreenPak, we introduce ameni- ties to help communities achieve higher environmental perfor- mance in an economically viable manner," he said. "This entails a combination of methods, includ- ing the provision of bring-in sites, kerbside collections and direct collections from commercial outlets. We make it a point to sit with each and every local council in order to address their specific needs and provide tailor-made solutions." While these initiatives serve well to raise awareness at grass- roots level, GreenPak is calling for localities and business communi- ties alike to take the next step forward and embrace sustainable waste practices. Over the past decades, the amount of solid waste in Malta has grown alongside the growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This linkage needs to be broken and the quantities of waste gener- ated by increased commercial ac- tivity needs to be decoupled from the growth in GDP. "Till now, we have always as- sumed that the increase in waste generation due to economic growth is an indispensable re- lationship. In order to achieve real sustainability, we have to shift from this mentality and break the link between economic growth and waste generation," said Schembri. "The recently published NSO figures show that whilst recycling of waste is on the increase, the rate of increase in waste generated is also high". For enquiries regarding Green- Pak, including its waste collection scheme, bring-in-sites and other information one can visit the GreenPak website www.green- pak.com.mt or call on telephone 2166 0233. Official figures show that GreenPak Cooperative Society was responsible for 74% of all household collections of recyclables waste
