13 maltatoday, SUNDAY, 8 OCTOBER 2017 Refusing seat on committee, Opposition lays down rules for waste management plan Armed hold-up in Msida PAUL COCKS DESPITE having decided not to appoint a representative on a tech- nical waste-to-energy committee set up by the government, the Op- position yesterday reiterated its commitment to playing a part in ensuring that any decisions taken by the government in this sector were in the best interests of the environment and of generations to come. In a letter to the chairman of Par- liament's permanent committee for the environment and planning, Opposition spokesman Karol Aq- uilina said the project would inad- vertently have long-lasting effects on waste management and the country's environment. Aquilina said it was the perma- nent committee's responsibility to scrutinise the government's deci- sions that could impact the envi- ronment and that it was therefore imperative that the committee invite environment minister Jose Herrera and the chief executive of- ficer of WasteServ to explain any decisions taken so far and how they plan to proceed. He said the committee should also ask for any reports commis- sioned by the government on the matter and to call experts and representatives of environmental organisations to also appear before the committee. DENISE GRECH THERE was an armed robbery yesterday at around 2.30pm at a shop in Triq l-Isqof Caruana, Msida. Police on site confirmed that the robber entered the shop carrying a metal weapon and went up to the cashier. Speaking in Maltese, the robber demanded that the 54 year-old cashier hand over the money in the cash register. The cashier, a resident of Siġġiewi, was unharmed in the incident. The robber then made a quick getaway with the cash. The group, which includes five couples, has not been released on bail. Four children, aged between three and six, were also found to be accomplices of the pick-pocket- ing scheme and were accompany- ing the group when they were ar- raigned in court yesterday. A number of the accused were found to be repeat offenders in various countries. The police arraigned the gang on Thursday after they received infor- mation that the group was plan- ning to leave Malta that day. In the police operation, 10 Bul- garians and three children were arrested outside the Sliema hotel they were staying at, at around 12.30 pm. The police arrested another three Bulgarians and a young boy that same day, carrying suitcases which contained money in euro, sterling and other foreign currency, along with phones that were reported stolen. Surveillance footage shows the arrested using children as pick pocketing bait. The children are currently wait- ing for their grandparents to come to Malta next week to take them back to Bulgaria. Magistrate Clare Stafrace Zam- mit presided the case. Four children were also found to have been dragged in as accomplices of the pick-pocketing gang Karol Aquilina
