maltatoday, SUNDAY, 8 OCTOBER 2017 VI Logistics & Shipping Wartsila clinches contract to supply Finnish LNG terminal Affordable parcel delivery for all Europeans TECHNOLOGY group Wartsila has clinched a turnkey contract from Hamina LNG to supply a LNG receiving terminal to be built in Hamina, Finland. The scope of the contract work includes site filling, soil refurbish- ment, civil works, infrastructure, full containment storage tank with a combined net volume of 30,000 cu m, regasification and gas metering, boil-off gas handling system, electrical and control system, unloading, load- ing system and bunkering and truck loading. The LNG terminal is scheduled to be operational in August 2020. The port of Hamina will be the first LNG receiving terminal in Finland connected to Finnish gas grid, offering security of sup- ply to gas customers. When the terminal is operational, LNG can be delivered very quickly also to major harbours in Finland by us- ing trucks. "We wanted to create a terminal infrastructure which would pro- vide bunkering for vessels as well as diversify the country's sources of gas supply. Wartsila offered us full EPC capabilities as well as a unique know-how in gas process- ing," said Peter van Buuren, ceo of Hamina LNG, a joint venture between Hamina Energia and Alexela Varahalduse. Timo Mahlanen, senior business development manager, Wärtsilä Energy Solutions, said: "The Hamina project is part of Fin- land's plans to create a network of medium scale LNG terminals with the aim of offering gas sup- ply to the local industry and LNG for ship bunkering, and ensuring an additional source of gas for Finland. "The project will bring a signifi- cant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by providing cleaner fuel for transport and industry. At the same time, the LNG infra- structure will increase the security of supply in Finland with gas grid connection," Mahlanen said. The port of Hamina will be the first LNG receiving terminal in Finland connected to Finnish gas grid NEXT Thursday, the European Parliament's Transport Com- mittee will vote on an ambitious reform to make prices of parcel delivery in Europe more trans- parent and more affordable for citizens and businesses. With the digital market boom- ing, parcel deliveries across Europe already count for more than four billion parcels every year. However, tackling unreason- ably high prices of cross-border parcels and improving access to relevant information ser- vices, especially in remote and sparsely-populated areas, will help boost e-commerce in the internal market. MEP Markus Ferber, Shadow Rapporteur for the EPP Group, strongly advocated a balanced approach between competition and regulation as too much regulation would slow down the growing digital economy at the expense of jobs and would result in higher prices for customers. "Currently, customers are fac- ing high prices in cross-border parcel delivery due to the lack of comparable options," he said. "This regulation will pave the way to unlocking the potential of the digital single market to the benefit of citizens in Europe."
