MARCH 10 Ida Kelarova's Jazz Famelija Ida Kelarova invites the best of Czech and Slovak musicians to collaborate on this music formation that links Romani harmonies and Latin-American rhythms to the sound of a jazz band. Besides classical compo- sitions from previous albums and folk Romani songs, the rep- ertoire also covers new songs composed by the lead singer, guitarist and bandleader, Desid- erius Dužda. All the while, Ida Kelarova opens her heart to the audience, investing her legend- ary voice into this passionate performance. The locally-based Organic Choir will open for the show and collaborating with Ida Kelarova's Jazz Famelija later in the set. Kelarova will also pre- sent a short workshop based around her 'Everyone Can Sing' concept. This performance will be taking place at the Don Bosco Oratory Theatre in Victoria, Gozo. THEATRE FEBRUARY 25 Años Luz Shadow puppetry performance by Spanish theatre company Luz Micro y Punto at the Mqabba Primary School Hall, Mqabba at 18:00 (February 24) and 16:00 (February 25). The story centres around a composer caught in the process of musing over her next score, which she serendipi- tously uncovers through a play- ful creative process. LEARNING FEBRUARY 27 Human Brain Consultation Workshop AcrossLimits have been en- gaged to take part in an EU project called the Human Brain Project – which strives to accel- erate the fields of neuroscience, computing and brain-related medicine. The goal of this con- sultation is to explore the val- ues, concerns and opinions of citizens in Europe regarding the use of neuroscience, and especially the fact that it could be used by others for political, security, intelligence or mili- tary purposes. A one-day work- shop with 30 citizens will be held on the potential dual use of research results. It will be held on Tuesday 27 February at AcrossLimits, Hilltop Gardens, Triq L-Inkwina, Naxxar, Malta from 09:30 to 16:00. This event is free of charge and includes a lunch and coffee breaks. PUBLIC TALKS MARCH 1 Culture Matters Annual seminar about the im- pact of Valletta 2018 taking place at 09:00 at the KSU Common Room, University of Malta. The seminar includes discussions by the re- searchers tasked with assessing the impact of the European Capital of Culture title and the Foundation's work over the past three years. The seminar focuses on the topics of cultural participation, branding, tourism, the impact on the com- munity and the impact of the infra- structural projects such as The Val- letta Design Cluster, Is-Suq tal-Belt, MUŻA and Strait Street. The semi- nar also features a guest presenta- tion by Szilvia Nagy from LOCOP, a research organisation focused on cultural policy and supra-regional- funding across the EU. MARCH 3 Rhythms of the City: a public debate Rhythms of the City: a public de- bate, draws from Lefebvre's provo- cations in 'Attempts at the Rhyth- manalysis of Mediterranean Cities'. The debate will bring together a number of professionals/experts in the fields of interculturalism, mul- tilingualism, cultural festivals and cities – all within the context of this year's The Mediterranean Di- mension project. The debate will start with three main provocations and proceed with reactions from a number of professionals/experts, leading to a public debate. It is be- ing held on Saturday between 10:30 and 12:30 at St James Cavalier in Valletta. FILM SCREENING FEBRUARY 28 Book of Love Writer-director Xue Xiaolu fol- lows up the hit 2013 Chinese-Hong Kong romance, Finding Mr Right, with the sequel, Book of Love. This instalment also reunites lead ac- tors Tang Wei and Wu Xiubo in a new storyline, where two strangers spark up an unexpected romance through handwritten letters. As much a commentary on modern economic trends and social iso- lation as it is a romance, Book of Love illustrates China's growing love for romantic comedy. This film is being organised by the China Cultural Centre, and forms part of the Happy Chinese New Year in Valletta 2018 series. It is being screened on Wednesday at St James Cavalier. RING-ROAD RACING MARCH 11 University of Malta Ring- Road Races Sunday 11 March will mark the 7th edition of this annual road running event, in aid of Hospice Malta. The University races date back to as early as the 80s when University students would gather on the ring road for a showdown of the fittest. Fast-forward 30 years or so and the races have come a long way. Last year was the biggest event yet and managed to raise €3,150 for Hospice Malta! This year the organisers have already raised almost €1,500 and are definitely planning to break the standing record. As always, there are a lot of surprises in store. Appli- cations close on Wednesday 7 March.
