The refined beauty, the intricate shape and sheer variety of their flowers is mind-blowing. There are over 28,000 known species of orchids worldwide, that's more than all the known species of birds, reptiles and mammals com- bined. In Malta we have about 36 species, some extremely rare, others hard to spot. One of our more common and visible species – the pyramidal orchid (M. orkida pirami- dali) – has been in flower for the past few weeks. Go for a walk in a nice garrigue area like Marfa Ridge or Majjistral, and you're sure to come across these lovely pink-to-crim- son cones standing proud (if rather short) on their sap green stalks. But no picking please, try and enjoy beauty without destroying it. For a great book about our orchids get Stephen Mifsud's excellent Orchids of the Maltese Is- lands.
