19 LETTERS & EDITORIAL maltatoday | SUNDAY • 26 MAY 2019 Mikiel Galea Delia's speeches ONE truly wonders whether Adrian Delia, when he makes his regular surreal and hysterical speeches, is in total con- trol of his senses. The ridiculous statements we are hearing daily border on those we expect to hear from Zaren tal-Ajkla. Besides this, Adrian Delia keeps con- tradicting the arguments he would have already made in the same speech. Just one of many such examples: In one of his most recent speeches Delia said that we do not have potholes in our roads (!). Hence there was no need to spend all those millions on redoing the roads. A few moments later Delia said that this government has not spent one cent on Malta's infrastructure! How embarrassing it must be for intelligent PN voters to hear their own supposed party leader, ridiculing himself and their party in this way. It seems that those within the PN hierarchy who wish to get rid of him, are allowing him the freedom to continue digging his own political grave. Eddy Privitera Mosta Memorial service AFTER the massive fire at Notre-Dame cathedral, an elderly woman who lives in the vicinity, said: "I'm devastated. It's a symbol of Paris. It's a symbol of Chris- tianity. It's a whole world that is collaps- ing." The burning of the iconic cathedral is a portent of the ruin that will befall the Roman Catholic Church some day in the future. The civilizations and religions of an- cient Egypt and the Near East lasted for thousands of years. Now they lie in ruins. "There was a day when Jupiter was the king of the gods, and any man who doubted his power was ipso facto a bar- barian and an ignoramus. But where in all the world is there a man who worships Jupiter today? "What has become of Assur, Amon-re, Anubis, Astarte, Baal, Cybele, Dagon, Enki, Enlil, Inanna, Isis, Ishtar, Marduk, Osiris, Tammuz...All these were once gods of the highest eminence. Many of them are mentioned with fear and trembling in the Old Testament... Men laboured for generations to build vast temples to them. "Yet in the end they all withered and died, and today there is none so poor to do them reverence" (H.L. Mencken, Me- morial Service). After the memorial service came God's funeral: "Framing him jealous, fierce, at first, we gave him justice as the ages rolled... Tricked by our own early dream and need of solace, we grew self- deceived, our making soon our maker did we deem, and what we had imagined we believed" (Thomas Hardy, God's Funeral). John Guillaumier St Julian's Open letter to MPs Back in 2010, I suffered damage to my balcony because cars were parking in front of my three garages making traffic pass under this balcony which is not high enough for trucks. I sent Mosta local council a letter about this (12/10/10). Due to the lack of action I referred the case to the Ombudsman (EP 0018), whose conclusions (22/5/15) were: "On the first complaint, Dr Farrugia had explained that Local Councils have no powers to enforce regulations. Even if this is correct, Local Councils have the duty to work in liaison with the relevant authorities to ensure proper observation of regulations. On the second complaint, it is a cardinal duty of Local Councils to listen to their residents and be receptive to what they have to say." One would have thought that Mo- sta council would have acted but, no! Since last year the parking issues became even worse. Apart from the dif- ficulty to park/drive my cars into/from the garages, I end up fighting with drivers who park their cars in front of my garag- es. On 22/10/18 I sent a request for the council to put a 'no parking' sign. Mo- sta LC replied that they referred the case to LESA. After a few weeks I informed the council again but they started not to reply to my queries. I then complained to the Department of Local Govern- ment. On 1/2/19, they sent a letter (Ref: CCN186/19) to Mosta LC. I thought that Mosta LC would act, but no! My conclusion is that Mosta LC does not care about either residents, DLG or the Ombudsman! Local councils should be there to help their residents and not be insensitive, if not being a hindrance. Please understand my frustration. John Camilleri Mosta Letters & Clarifications
