maltatoday | SUNDAY • 30 JUNE 2019 11 CULTURE HERITAGE Malta is offering the public the opportunity to explore Ħaġar Qim and Mna- jdra Archaeological Park in the evening by or- ganising a sunset heritage trail on Friday 5th July. The event will include a visit to the two unique prehistoric sites of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Temples, as well as the surround- ing Mediterranean garigue landscape with its many historical features including the Misqa Tanks, the Congreve Memorial and the near- by Ħamrija Tower. Curators will be available on site to discuss the archaeological remains and highlight the natural features surrounding the temples. This event will offer a rare opportunity to explore and understand these sites in more detail, especially since the area will be void of the large number of visitors usually present during the regular opening hours. There will be two tours taking place simul- taneously, one in Maltese and one in English. At the end of the tour light refreshments will be served at the Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Visitor Centre. Participants are to meet with a Heritage Malta representative at the Ħaġar Qim car park at 6pm. Price for tickets is €20 for adults, seniors and students, and €15 for Heritage Malta members and children. Tickets are limited and can be bought from any Heritage Malta museum or site or online. More information is available at www.her- itagemalta.org or the official Facebook page. Sunset Tour at Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Archaeological Park ON Sunday, 7 July, students who have acquired their Heritage Malta Passport Visa, are invited to attend to an exclu- sive tour of a fougasse and the Qolla l-Bajda Battery, both located at Marsal- forn. This visa is given to students once they collect ten different stamps in their passport during visits to ten dif- ferent Heritage Malta sites and mu- seums. Two adults may accompany each student for this special occasion. Although a fougasse might nowa- days look just like a huge hole, in the past this was used as a weapon against the enemy while approaching land from the sea. Acting as a sort of mor- tar, the hollow of the fougasse was filled with stones and gunpowder. The stones turned into projectiles when the gunpowder was lit, dam- aging vessels or killing people when they hit the target. The Qolla l-Bajda Battery overlooks the inlets of Qbajjar and Xwejni. It was constructed by the Order of St John between 1715 and 1716 as one of a series of coastal fortifications around the coasts of the Maltese Is- lands. This event offers a unique oppor- tunity to visit one of the few remain- ing fougasses and to learn about the military role of Marsalforn during the time of the Order of St John. The event is free of charge and is open only to Heritage Malta Passport Visa holders. Tickets are available on a first-come- first-served basis from all Heritage Malta sites and museums. No tickets will be sold on site and admission is subject to presenting pre-issued tick- ets, together with the Heritage Malta Passport and Visa. The first tour starts at 9am, last tour starts at noon. Each tour lasts 50 minutes. Participamts are to meet at Qolla l-Bajda Battery. More information is available at www.heritagemalta.org or the official Facebook page. Heritage Malta Passport Visa holders invited to a military Marsalforn trail
