maltatoday | SUNDAY • 20 OCTOBER 2019 21 COMMERCIAL NESTLÉ has just announced a world- first: its popular YES! bars are now be- ing sold in recyclable paper wrappers. This is being done using the 'flow wrap cold seal' packaging technique usually only achieved with plastic films and laminates. This paper wrapper is a further step in Nestlé's commitment to making all of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025. The wrapper is made of a coated paper from sustainable sources certi- fied by the Forest Stewardship Coun- cil (FSC). Malta-based consumers can simply pop the wrapper into their grey recycling bag or into one of the white paper recycling bins. "Although this wasn't an easy change to make, this launch is very much in- line with our strategy to speed up the development of new products that meet new trends and changing con- sumer demand," Alfred Borg, Market- ing Manager for Nestlé, said. "It did take a long time and a lot of work to bring this innovation to mar- ket but it has been worth it. Aside from preventing plastic waste, the new wrap- per also has the great qualities of paper that makes the bars easy to tear open and enjoy. They have also been exten- sively tested to make sure they keep the YES! bars in perfect condition during production, transport and storage." And there was more news announced by Nestlé, with the local addition of its Delicious Dark Choc, Banana & Pecan Nut Bar to the YES! range. This was added to the already-available selec- tion, namely: the Tempting Dark Choc, Sea Salt & Almond Nut Bar; Sumptu- ous Cranberry & Dark Choc Nut Bar; Delightful coffee, Dark Choc & Cherry Nut Bar; Luscious Raspberry & Chia Seed Fruit Bar; and Heavenly Pineap- ple & Coconut Fruit Bar. Each YES! nut bar is vegetarian, high in fibre, and is a source of protein. The fruit and vegetable bars are vegan, glu- ten free, lactose free, high in fiber, have no added sugar, and contribute to one of your five a day. Each bar comes in under 190 calories and under 5g of sugar, making it a very healthy snack to have on the go, and the whole bar con- tains no artificial sweeteners, flavours, colours or preservatives. The fact they are high in fibre is ideal, as this helps to lower cholesterol, control blood sug- ar levels and keep you full for longer. The high protein content, meanwhile, makes them ideal for those on high- protein, lower-carb diets. Further developments are now un- derway, and Nestlé is working to roll out more recyclable packing innova- tions in the months to come. World-first for Nestlé's YES! with recyclable paper wrappers Yes! bars in recycling packaging are now widely available across leading supermarkets, confectioners and convenience stores in Malta and Gozo SOME 40 members of staff from Frank Salt Real Estate's team have recently got together, and got their hands dirty to help make Malta's beaches cleaner. Mistra Bay and Dahlet Qorrot in Gozo were selected for this year's activity, forming part of the company's Let's Go Environmental drive to give back to society and Malta's envi- ronment. Geared up with gloves and garbage bags, the team spent an afternoon collecting lit- ter and debris from the two beaches and seabed. More than 180kgs of litter were collected - from cigarette butts, to plastic junk and other usual litter as well as the odd waste including car tyres, metal ca- bles and even bird cages! Malta, like most places around the world, is doing its utmost to raise aware- ness amongst its citizens about the ur- gency to tackle climate change and envi- ronmental issues. According to the UK's Royal Statistical Society's December 2018 statistics, some eight billion pounds of plastic waste flow into the oceans every year from coastal regions. This, along with other waste thrown in the sea depletes the oxygen content in the water which is vital for marine animals. It also generates toxic waste, contaminates their food chain and gives rise to failure in the reproductive system of marine animals. Each year more than 100,000 mammals and sea turtles and over one million seabirds die due to this. "At Frank Salt Real Estate we under- stand that our quality of life depends on a cleaner environment, which we need to protect for our children and generations to come," said company Director Doug- las Salt. The company remains commit- ted to participate in bringing about the necessary change, not only by organising clean-ups but taking active action to re- duce waste in its offices and by making use of recyclable materials and supplies were possible.
