maltatoday, SUNDAY, 5 APRIL 2015 Sport 37 MOTORSPORTS SAILING A flying start for Camilleri at Hal-Far THE Grimaldi Lines HillClimb and Sprint championship 2015 organised by the Island Car Club (ICC) was off to a flying start as 51 drivers took to the road on Tuesday with its first venue being the industrial park area of Hal-Far. The ICC would like to thank Mario Mifsud who organised "MDRA for Charity-Solidarjeta` Bil-Motorsport 2015" and was a paramount figure in securing permission to hold this suc- cessful event, and the Malta Industri- al Parks, the Police Force, Civil Pro- tection, St John's Ambulance Service, Wardens, marshals and all helpers. This was a united event in conjunc- tion with MDRA (Malta Drag Racing Assoc.) and numerous other motor- sport clubs who altogether attained the total sum of €23,000 in only one day, reflecting how compassionate these enthusiasts really are towards worthy causes. This is the tenth an- niversary that this motorsport char- ity event was held to aid those in need. The money was collected along the way namely for "id-Dar Tal-Prov- idenza", Inspire, the Malta Commu- nity Chest Fund, and the Malta Au- tism Centre. Blustery winds and bright sunshine greeted a full (over 50) paddock of competitors all in different groups starting from Classic cars to stand- ard road cars, Autocross cars, modi- fied saloon cars and single-seaters. The start-line of the race was along the side of the car park of Ghar Has- an. Once off through the winding roads aside the factories competi- tors undertook three chicanes in the straights, eight apexes and the finish line at the square adjacent to the Hal- Far Quarter mile track. The length of the sprint course was approximately 1,800 metres with the best time of the day clocked at 66.376 seconds. This superb time was achieved by overall winner of the day Keith Camilleri in his UPS-Logistics Radical Prosport. Camilleri is the reigning cham- pion and is already showing domi- nance after being nearly two seconds quicker than runner-up competitor Mark Micallef. Micallef clocked a fine time of 68.158sec in his Avon & Fiamm Radical ProSport. An ex- cellent third was Fabio Baldacchino (Tonys Bar OMS-200M) with a time of 68.674secs. Teddy Aquilina produced the best performance in the category for vet- eran drivers, achieving a superb time of 78.298secs with his popular black SR1, ranking 13th overall. Jeremy Cassar (VW Golf GTi) came out tops in the competitive front wheelers securing the top spot and 14th place in the overall rank- ing after a terrific final drive which put him ahead of Michael Micallef (Honda Civic). John Zammit was outstanding with his Lotus Elise, posting the seventh best time in run three and fastest of the rear wheel drive saloon cars. He was closely followed by Edward Calleja (Lotus Elise). Anthony Bernard (Mitsubishi Evo6) was fastest in the four wheel drive se- ries, posting a time good enough to slip past Charles Grech in his Subaru Impreza and 15th place on the list. The classic car series was domi- nated by newcomer Mick Hay in his Fisher Fury. Clifford Debono grabbed the runner-up position in his Triumph Vitesse. The next event is scheduled for next Sunday at Mtahleb, Rabat. The first run commences at 9am. PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID AXISA ENTITLED 'Wind in their Sails" the com- petition was judged by a panel of three re- nowned professional photographers. THE chosen panel, made up of Kurt Arrigo, Nico Martinez and Rene Rossignaud have been tasked to not only evaluate the pho- tographic capabilit y of entrants but also to identif y who best captured the nature of sailing by visually communicating the power, grace and beaut y of the sea. The competition was open to both ama- teur and professional photographers and each entrant could submit a maximum of three entries. To ensure that there was no bias only photographs taken from view points accessible to the general public were be accepted. entrants went through a pre- liminary round, from which ten finalists were chosen. Organised by Yachting Events Ltd., co- hosted by the Ministry for Economy, In- dustry and Small Business and supported by the Malta Tourism Authorit y and Trans- port Malta, the RC44 Valletta Cup will host an impressive mix of America's Cup vet- erans and Olympic Medallists teamed up with top class international businessmen for the first time in Malta to produce some exhilarating racing in our waters. On Tuesday 31 the panel announced the top ten finalists, which were then published on Facebook and a public vote asked. the Public voting constituted 25% of the total number of points. Public voting stopped on Friday at 5pm. The Winners of the '#RC44VallettaCup' 'Wind in their Sails' Photographic competi- tion are as follows:- 1st Place - Christian Mangion 2nd Place - Paul Tickle 3rd Place - Adele Muscat Special Mention Award goes to Joseph B. Muscat for the high Facebook engagement garnered. Prizes included, the RC44 Champion- ship Tour Book, a copy of the book by Rene Rossignaud – The First Thirteen years. as well as a copy of renowned award winning photographer Kurt Arrigo's book – Malta A Coastal Journey; and RC44 Valletta Cup merchandise.
