And when the draw was made on Saturday morning, the Spaniard was placed on a semi- final collision course with his great rival, one who beat him in the Monte Carlo final two years ago. Djokovic faces a potential opening encounter against Nicolas Almagro, a claycourt expert who must first overcome a qualifier. He is also seeded to meet US Open champion Marin Cilic in the quarter-finals, although the Croat is still feeling his way back from injury and having played just one match so far this season it would be a surprise to see him in the last eight. Nadal will start against either the young talented Austrian Dominic Thiem or France's Lucas Pouille. He could have to battle his way past John Isner and fellow Spaniard David Fer- rer in order to set up a last-four clash with Djokovic. On the other side of the draw, Roger Federer is seeded to reach the final. He is in the same quarter of the draw as fellow Swiss Stan Wawrinka. Should they meet it would be a rematch of last year's final won by Wawrinka. Federer will open his bid for a title he has never won against either Frenchman Jeremy Chardy or a qualifier, while Jiri Vesely or Juan Monaco will be first up for the defending champion. Milos Raonic is the fourth seed and therefore scheduled to meet Federer in the last four. However, his claycourt record is not the best so sixth seed Tomas Berdych will fancy his chances of coming through that quarter of the draw. Nadal (l) and Djokovic: Could meet in the semis in Monte Carlo
