40 maltatoday, SUNDAY, 9 AUGUST 2015 Gozo The spectacular sister isle There's never a shortage of things to do while in Gozo and as tourists and locals alike make the channel crossing over Santa Marija week, you can expect larger crowds than usual. Here are a few activities for the whole family that should be a bit less busy, even while the sum- mer holidays are in full swing. Rent a 4x4 and get exploring Get yourself a rough, tough ve- hicle and explore the island away from the tourist hubs. Remember to respect any signage relating to private property and protected ar- eas. Pack a lunch and lots of water, and discover the unseen Gozo. Take in the Citadel The sun-kissed stone and im- pressive fortifications are a treat whether you're a newbie or a re- turn visitor. Wander about its nar- row streets and head to the walls to catch the breeze. Meet the locals There are plenty of places to hang out and have a drink. Find yourself a shady bar and enjoy a pint (or a milkshake, for the young ones) and while away the scorching after- noon hours. You may want to con- sider a siesta afterwards. Try the food You have to try really hard to find bad seafood in Gozo – the stand- ards are high and the locals take pride in their catch. Xlendi has a selection of restaurants offering fish fresh off the boat. For the land- lubbers, you can't go wrong with a Gozitan ftira. Book in advance to avoid disappointment and then take the fragrant, mouth-watering meal to your favourite lookout and enjoy the view. See the stars No, I don't mean Brangelina (they packed up a while back, with noth- ing but praise for the little island). August is the time to lay back and gaze upwards as the Perseid me- teor shower scatters shooting stars across the sky. Try and find some- where away from light pollution but don't worry – you can catch a glimpse of the brightest ones wherever you are. Don't forget to make a wish! Hit the beach This is a no-brainer. Find your- self a nice patch of sand (or rock) and take your favourite trashy pa- per back. Don't forget the sunblock and a hat and plenty of water to drink. When it gets too hot just slip into the bright blue sea and let your worries float away. Jump in Gozo is home to some of the best diving in the world. Get in touch with one of the many dive shops on the island and let them show you around the underwater mar- vels that litter the Gozitan coast. From amateurs to advanced divers, there's something for everyone un- der those gentle waves.
