Themes may change from one week to the other MOTOGP Márquez sweeps to pole at Indianapolis WORLD Champion Marc Már- quez breezed to his fifth pole po- sition of the season as he topped qualifying for the third successive year at Indianapolis. Márquez posted a time of 1.31.884 on his first attempt in the 15 minute Q2 session and his lap was never threatened by rivals. Honda team-mate Dani Ped- rosa came closest, clocking a lap 0.171 down on Márquez to secure a Honda 1-2 at a circuit where the manufacturer has not been beaten since 2009. Jorge Lorenzo was third fast- est for Yamaha, with LCR's Cal Crutchlow matching his highest qualifying result of the year with fourth. Danilo Petrucci was the highest placed Ducati rider in fifth, ahead of Bradley Smith and Andrea Ian- none. Championship leader Valentino Rossi could manage only eighth and will line-up from the middle of the third row. Maverick Viñales secured auto- matic progression through to Q2 and qualified in ninth place, while Andrea Dovizioso could manage only 10th. Tech 3's Pol Espargaró and Suzu- ki rider Aleix Espargaró rounded out the Q2 contenders. Scott Redding was the quickest of the riders unable to progress from Q1 and will line-up from 13th posi- tion, ahead of Héctor Barberá and Yonny Hernández. LCR rookie Jack Miller secured his best MotoGP grid slot with 16th position while Aprilia new- comer Stefan Bradl beat team- mate Álvaro Bautista to 17th place, the latter surviving a lurid moment during the closing stages of Q1. Eugene Laverty was 19th, ahead of the only American rider in the field, 2006 World Champion Nicky Hayden. Alex de Angelis qualified in 21st place leaving Mike de Meglio, who crashed at the final corner, and the returning Toni Elias to complete the grid.
