Events 43 maltatoday, Sunday, 9 auguSt 2015 University Research Trust, GlaxoSmithKline sign sponsorship agreement for mobile dental clinic The University of Malta Research Trust (RIDT) signed a sponsorship agreement with GlaxoSmithKline (Malta) Ltd (GSK) for the setting up of a Mobile Dental Clinic. In the coming weeks, the Mobile Dental Clinic will reach out to sectors of Maltese society to conduct a na- tional survey on oral health, while offering screening and advice. This project is an initiative of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the University of Malta which is being supported by RIDT. The aim is to raise awareness about oral health- care within the community and includes the promotion of research and an increased active participa- tion in the socio-economic wellbe- ing of the Maltese population. GSK Malta Country Manager Monica Abdilla said, "GSK is a science-led global healthcare com- pany that researches and develops a broad range of innovative products with the mission to enable consum- ers to do more, feel better and live longer. "As part of this mission, our oral healthcare business focuses specifi- cally on making the world's mouths healthier. We aim to achieve this by working continuously to develop and bring to market new products for a wide range of oral healthcare needs" RIDT CeO Wilfred Kenely said, "It is highly significant to have a world leading pharmaceutical com- pany like GSK joining our efforts to carry out this project. This is a first for the University of Malta to em- bark on such a worthwhile dental outreach programme in Malta and Gozo. "To reach the community in the coming weeks, this programme has two aims: sensibilising the commu- nity about the importance of dental care while at the same time gather- ing information at grassroots level for academic research." Other sponsors include Cherubino Ltd, Suratek Ltd and Bart enterpris- es, who have donated dental equip- ment for the Mobile Dental Clinic, the Good Causes Fund and Rahuma International Ltd. The Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery Prof Nikolai Attard said, "The University's Mobile Dental Clinic will be introducing educa- tional preventive programmes that will hopefully result in an overall improvement where oral health care is concerned." With emirates taking delivery of 24 new aircraft in 2014/15 and 26 new aircraft planned to enter service this year, retiring older aircraft helps emirates operate one of the youngest fleets in the skies today. emirates currently operates 234 all wide-body air- craft, across six aircraft types. It is also the world's largest operator of the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft. "Our modern and efficient air- craft not only help reduce envi- ronmental impact, but also enable emirates to offer the latest facili- ties and provide our customers with a better onboard experience as well as the capacity we need to grow our operation. Our invest- ment in modern wide-bodied air- craft has always been the corner- stone of our strategy and success," said Adel Al Redha, executive Vice President and Chief Opera- tions Officer, emirates. With seven aircraft phased out in 2014 and another 10 planned for retirement this year, the emir- ates Aircraft Assets team of 35 employees in coordination with other teams are busy around the clock managing the retirement of older emirates aircraft. emirates recently phased out A6-eMF, the last remaining Boe- ing 777-200 from its fleet. The aircraft departed from Dubai In- ternational to Arizona via Boston for de-registration on 14 July. "In order to keep our fleet mod- ern, efficient and appealing to our customers, we phase out some of our older aircraft on a regular basis. So far, in 2014 and 2015 we have phased out three B777-200s and eight A340-500s on schedule, which is no mean feat in itself. For the year 2015/2016, we're plan- ning a total of 10 phaseouts," says Philip Audsley, Manager, Aircraft Assets. Depending on the aircraft agree- ment, emirates either returns the aircraft to the lessor at the end of the lease term, or presents the air- craft to the market for sale. "The process of giving back a leased aircraft actually begins up to a year prior to the return of the aircraft, and includes meetings with the leasing company, pro- viding paperwork and service/ history records, liaising with the procurement department regard- ing the high value items fitted to the aircraft (such as landing gears and engines), and multiple physi- cal inspections," Mr. Audsley con- tinued. Physically, the aircraft goes through a number of processes, including a 'de-branding' exercise, which includes removing emir- ates livery and branding from the aircraft. In effect, the aircraft be- comes unrecognisable that it was an emirates aircraft, apart from the seating and carpet, which re- mains intact. emirates pilot, Captain Con- stantinos Nicolaou flew A6-eMF to its final destination in Arizona. "She's been good to us," said Captain Nicolaou, as he bid fare- well to the aircraft. "Who would have thought when we first re- ceived this Boeing 777-200, that less than two decades later emir- ates would emerge as the world's largest wide-body airline, and the world's largest operator of Boeing 777s. I wonder what the next two decades will bring." emirates operates a daily sched- uled flight between Dubai and Malta via Larnaca, Cyprus.
