56 Sport maltatoday, SUNDAY, 20 SEPTEMBER 2015 FOOTBALL WEST Ham withstood a bar- rage of second-half pressure to condemn Manchester City to their first defeat of the Barclays Premier League season. Goals from Victor Moses and Diafra Sakho got the Hammers off to a f lying start at the Etihad Stadium and they held on for a 2-1 win after Kevin de Bruyne pulled one back. City dominated after the break and created a series of chances but Hammers goalkeeper Adri- an was in outstanding form and refused to be beaten. It was another notable away victory for Slaven Bilic's West Ham, who now sit just one place below City in second, after se- curing wins at Arsenal and Liv- erpool already this season. Jose Mourinho's Chelsea re- stored order with a battling 2-0 win over nine-man Arsenal at Stamford Bridge. The champions won at home for the first time in the league this season as Kurt Zouma headed in and Eden Hazard 's late shot ricocheted in off Ca- lum Chambers. The Blues, now unbeaten in eight league games with the Gunners, benefited from Arse- nal indiscipline as Gabriel was sent off after a series of alter- cations with Diego Costa and Santi Cazorla followed for two bookable offences. Chelsea striker Costa might have seen red himself after catching Laurent Koscielny with a f lailing arm and chest-butting the Frenchman. When Gabriel intervened, he became the subject of Costa's attention and the Gunners de- fender naively retaliated. After both men were booked by referee Mike Dean, Gabriel kicked Costa and was shown a straight red card. Saido Berahino scored for the winner for West Brom in their derby with Aston Villa less than three weeks after he stated he would never play for Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace again. The 22-year-old made that declaration during a Twitter rant after a deadline-day move to Tottenham failed to materi- alise. However, after coming on as a substitute in last weekend 's 0-0 draw with Southampton, he started at Villa Park and struck in a 1-0 win just before half- time, def lecting James Morri- son's effort beyond goalkeeper Brad Guzan. Newcastle, Sunderland and Stoke's winless streaks were all extended to six games as none of the trio were able to move out of the relegation zone. Leicester boss Claudio Rani- eri had promised pizza to his side if they kept a clean sheet at the Britannia Stadium, yet that incentive did not stop Pot- ters forward Bojan Krkic, start- ing a Premier League game for the first time since January, and Jonathan Walters finding the net inside 20 minutes. Ranieri 's side staged a come- from-behind victory against Aston Villa last weekend and six days on they fought back again to draw 2-2, Riyad Mahrez con- verting a penalty for his fifth of the season before Jamie Vardy levelled. Sunderland prop up the divi- sion as they were undone by a two-goal blitz inside the open- ing nine minutes in a 2-0 loss at Bournemouth. Callum Wilson scored for the fifth time in this campaign and Scotland international Matt Ritchie then scored a brilliant second, chesting and volleying in after a semi-cleared corner had reached him 25 yards out. Black Cats defender Younes Kaboul was then sent off for a pair of cautions on another dis- mal afternoon for Dick Advo- caat's side. Odion Ighalo's brace in the first 28 minutes gave Watford a 2-1 away triumph at Newcastle. The Nigeria international net- ted the winner against Swansea last weekend and his good form after signing a new deal contin- ued. Daryl Janmaat managed to pull one back for Newcastle in the second period. In the other 1500 BST kick-off, the spoils were shared in south Wales as Everton boss Roberto Martinez's return to old club Swansea resulted in a goalless stalemate. Toffees forward Kevin Mirallas picked up the fourth red card of the day for a wild lunge on Mo- dou Barrow that came less than two minutes after he had been introduced as a substitute.
