maltatoday, SUNDAY, 6 MARCH 2016 This Week 33 WHAT'S ON Visiting atypical sites in Gozo FLIMKIEN għal Ambjent Aħjar (FAA) presents its first heritage walk in Gozo on March 12, which will aim to take visitors around some of the less frequently seen parts of the picturesque sister isle. While the heritage and allure of the Azure Window and the Cittadella are well known to many, sites like Xerri's Grotto, the Santa Verna remains and Wied il-Mielah are less frequented and not as familiar to many. These sites are still very significant in telling the story of the island's history. The tour will begin in Xaghra with a visit to Xerri's Grotto, one of the two remaining caves found on the Maltese Islands where stalagmites and stalactites can be seen. It is an important site used by geologists to assist in his- torical dating. While in Xaghra, visitors will be guests of a tradi- tional farm, home to one of the last remaining active field windmills on the island. The tour will include the Statue of Our Lady of Mercy next to the Plague Hospital and a walk through the oldest part of the village to the Santa Verna prehistoric remains. After lunch at a traditional bakery, the tour will continue via the trackless train through the Xwejni Saltpans, Wied il-Ghasri, the Ta' Sdieri Area to the Wied il- Mielah coastal window. The tour will end in Gharb, the second oldest parish outside Victoria with a visit to the parish museum. Meeting point is at Cirkewwa Ferry on March 12 at 08:30. The tour will depart with the 09:00 ferry from Cirkewwa and return with the 18:00 ferry from Mgarr. Price is at €30 for FAA Members and €35 for Non-Members. The price is inclusive of lunch, transport in Gozo and entry fees related to the tour. Price is not inclusive of the Gozo Ferry. The tour will include one hour of light walking, so prospec- tive visitors are reminded to wear comfortable shoes and waterproof clothing in case of rain. Access to Xerri Grotto is via a spiral staircase and is not advis- able to people suffering from arthritis or claustro- phobia. Bookings: https://ticketengine.faa.org.mt/. Booked guests are kindly requested to advise FAA with the selection of their main course preference – Pork or Chicken.
