maltatoday 15 CULTURE | SUNDAY • 28 APRIL 2019 IN just about a week, Ilħna Mitlufa will be back and on stage! This one-of a kind production , best described as documentary musical theatre is based on Andrew Alamango's years of con- tinuous research in the tradition of the Maltese traditional folk song known as 'għana'. The show presents a history of the visual her- itage of oral tradition passed from generation to generation enriched with live performances and recordings from the past. All in all, this show is an immersive experi- ence that takes us on a story-telling journey through our history and that of those who came before us. This has been done in the hope that the Maltese and Gozitans do not discard their traditions and stick by their roots because these traditions are us and these voices are our voices. The performance is quintessentially and in- trinsically Maltese, so it might come as a sur- prise to discover that it is aimed not only for the Maltese. The majority of people, wherever they hail from, can relate to the story one way or another because, although retold in the tra- ditional form of Maltese singing and poetry, it is a universal story. Therefore, with the pres- ence of English subtitles, Ilħna Mitlufa should appeal to different people at different levels. A further aim is the idea of having something that is musically valid and of high quality, albeit not necessarily in the form of a concert. The core message emerges through the exhibition, the dramaturgy, the voices, the images and the recordings. Ilħna Mitlufa isn't your average Għana con- cert, it's a storytelling session, sung not spo- ken by performers who have been doing this for years. Featuring għannejja Mariele Zam- mit, Anglu Theuma 'Il-Kina', Mikiel Cumbo 'L-Iżgej' with Johnny Grima 'Tal-Belt' on guitar and the musical accompaniment of George Aq- uilina 'Nofs il-Lejl', Karol Aquilina "Nofs Il-Lejl and Andrew Alamango. Ilħna Mitlufa will run for one afternoon only at the majestic Astra Theatre in Victoria Gozo, next Saturday at 4pm.
