17 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 14 APRIL 2019 CULTURE "THIS New Year's Eve, sparks will fly." Fiona has recently received a life-changing health diagnosis, so in an attempt to curb feel- ings of isolation and anxiety, she hosts a New Year's Eve re- union with her closest female friends. However, the night of celebration quickly goes wrong as old tensions surface, past rivalries are reignited, and harsh truths are confronted. Will the group make it through the night together or will their friendship fizzle out like a fireworks display? Filmed in a single night, the craziest and most cha- otic night of the year – NYE – and completely improvised, Friends, Foes & Fireworks is an ambitious drama exploring relationships, love, friendship, and the truths we try but fail to keep to ourselves by Mal- tese-Australian director Sarah Jayne Portelli and Ivan Male- kin. The production is being screened on Thursday 9 May, at 7.30pm at Spazju Kreattiv Cinema. Following the screening, the directors will discuss how they managed to film an entire fea- ture in one night without a script, while also answering questions from the audience. Friends, foes and fireworks FIRST shown at the Edinburgh Fringe festival and now coming to Malta, 'Zugunruhe' is Tom Bailey's award- winning performance that explores the migratory restlessness of birds through interpretative dance on Sunday 28th of April at 5.30pm, Catholic Institute, Floriana. Bailey shines a light on our over- protective mindset on borders in this performance. It looks into the travels of the marsh warbler, the world's only bird whose song echoes its route. Re- hearsing the performance amongst the birds in the wetlands of Somerset, UK Bailey creates a feast of bird behav- iour alongside a digital sound map of the marsh warbler's journey. Offering a fresh look at migration, Zugunruhe takes us on an exhilarating trip to see this movement across the globe, in ani- mals as well as in humans. In an age where migration is a topic so close to home, this performance is surely not one to be missed. A collaboration between performer, Tom Bailey and composer, Rowan Ev- ans alongside a group of Ornithology scientists and researchers from Uni- versity College London, Zugunruhe is an Edinburgh Fringe award-winning performance also covered by BBC ra- dio and organised by the team behind Science in the City.
