Banif Bank has once again extended its commitment as the main sponsor of the event, and will be offering its support and resources in the build-up and on the day of the event. "The Fun Run has undoubtedly become one of the biggest events on the Maltese calendar, one which has reaped a lot of success and which is eagerly anticipated every year," said Adrian Cop- pini, Chief Officer Corporate Services at Banif Bank. "We are always delighted to see an in- crease in the levels of participa- tion, enthusiasm and generosity with the ultimate aim of collect- ing funds with which the MCCF can continue its important work and help alleviate the difficulties faced by those individuals, fami- lies and segments of society who are in need." Organised by the Malta Com- munity Chest Fund in aid of L- Istrina, this year's edition will start from four points – Rabat for the runners and Santa Ven- era, Paola Square and University for those who will be walking. All routes will pass through a number of villages and lead to St George's Square, Valletta, where participants will be awarded a certificate of participation and join in the festivities after the event. Fun Run applications will open on the 28 October and can be collected from all Banif Bank branches, MCCF offices at the Palace in Valletta and the Palace at San Anton or online at www. funrun.org.mt Top left: The President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca urging the population to show their solidarity once again for this year's Fun Run. These producers will join the other big names from Piedmont in FBIC's portfolio – Fontanafredda, Borgog- no and Casa e. di Mirafiore. elio Altare is universally acknowl- edged to be one of the world's great- est winemakers. Altare was a leader of the revolu- tion in cellar and vineyard technique in the Barolo zone. Among his many now-commonplace innovations were the use of rotary fermenters, a short maceration period, and the use of small barriques for aging. The resulting wines, from Dolcetto to Barbera to Barolo, are often consid- ered to be the ultimate expressions of the soft, fragrant and lush quali- ties characteristic of the commune of La Morra. Altare wants no more than 1.5 kilos of grapes per vine and there are merely 5,500 vines per hec- tare. This is the real key that Altare maintains plus an organic approach to viticulture: "You can't make great wine without concentrated fruit." Luciano Sandrone is one of the iconic producers in Barolo, and his is both a well-known and extraor- dinary story. He started to learn viticulture at the age of 14 or 15, and after years of work as a cellar- man he depleted his life savings and purchased his first vineyard on the Cannubi hill in 1977, though he could only manage his land on the weekends while he continued to work. Sandrone's wines are sometimes described as straddling the modern and traditional styles in the region: elegant, attractive and easy to ap- preciate right from their first years in bottle, but with no less power and structure than traditional Barolos. Along with the extremely low yields in the vineyard and an obses- sive attention to training, pruning and harvesting, Sandrone has a very rational approach in the cellar. San- drone subjects his wines to medium- length maceration period, shorter than traditional, but makes limited use of new oak in the maturation process. His entire range of wines, all limited in production, are jewels of impeccably balanced concentra- tion and precision, and the ability to age for long periods of time. Poderi Aldo Conterno belongs to an elite group of historical Barolo producers who have truly shaped the history of winemaking in the Langhe. Aldo created a top-class Barolo, sought the world over, while isolating the best parcels in the Bus- sia vineyard and bottling them un- der their respective names, Vigna Cicala, Vigna Romirasco and Vigna Colonello. The iconic Barolo Gran- bussia, a selection of these three vineyards, is made in outstanding years only and considered a collec- tor's item in its own right. FBIC proudly imports and distrib- utes Elio Altare, Luciano Sandrone and Poderi Aldo Conterno wines locally. Submission of the project proposals opens with immediate effect and will close off by 18 De- cember 2015. now in its third year, the HSBC Catch the Drop is the largest-ever national environmental and edu- cational campaign of its kind in Malta and aims to forge a blue- print for progress on sustainability of water as a resource. The pro- gramme aims to educate 50,000 students between 2013 and 2016. This year's theme of the HSBC Wa- ter Programme – Catch the Drop campaign is 'Water Harvesting in Schools and Local Councils'. Proposals submitted by individu- al students will be evaluated under the 'School Outreach Programme', while those by schools and local councils will be evaluated under the 'Community Outreach Pro- gramme'. Some of the winning projects already implemented under the three-year campaign range from use of urns that filter rainwater to installation of water-saving Hippo bags in a school's flushing system. So this is a great opportunity to have your water conservation ideas gain recognition, once selected. The HSBC Water Programme – Catch the Drop campaign re- cently held a workshop for Catch the Drop link teachers from every primary and secondary school in the country. The workshop helped the teachers to understand how their students can submit an award-winning proposal. A work- shop for local councils will be held separately. In scholastic year 2013-14, the campaign received a total of 30 proposals, out of which 21 secured grants by the HSBC Water Pro- gramme – Catch the Drop cam- paign. In 2014-15, a total of 23 projects from schools and three from local councils were selected for implementation. Since its inception in 2013 and over two scholastic years, the HS- BC Water Programme – Catch the Drop has held 476 presentations, 41 theatre shows, 117 Sponge Bob and Frozen shows, 15 drama unit shows, and 32 site visits. These have touched 40,892 students and have had the participation of 350 staff volunteers from HSBC.
