Prime Minister inaugurates new MGA offices at SmartCity Malta THE Malta Gaming Authority's (MGA) new offices, at Smart- City Malta were officially inau- gurated on 16 February, 2016 by the Prime Minister Joseph Mus- cat, the MGA's senior leadership team and other distinguished guests. With a f loor area spanning over 2,562 square metres spread on two f loors, the new MGA of- fices meet the latest environ- mental standards, technological infrastructure, corporate envi- ronment and modern facilities which have substantially im- proved the working environment for the 150 employees. Further- more, the new offices incorpo- rate all the facilities needed for the Authority to carry out its functions and activities in-house being press events, networking events, seminars and training for staff. The open plan and "hot de- sking" environment also caters for future growth. In his opening address, Joseph Cuschieri, the MGA's Execu- tive Chairman, highlighted the milestones that have contrib- uted to the success of the gam- ing authority since its inception in 2004. Cuschieri mentioned the fact that Malta was the first EU Mem- ber State to enact comprehensive legislation on remote gaming. He added that industry stakehold- ers consider Malta as a thought leader and one of the foremost tried and tested jurisdictions in the world. He then extended his heartfelt thanks to the MGA's employees and all those who lent their support to the success story of the Malta Gaming Authority. Cuschieri mentioned that the most important project of the MGA this year is the new Gam- ing Act, which is expected to be presented in Parliament before the summer recess. The Executive Chairman an- nounced that the new legisla- tion will be a game changer for Malta and will future proof Malta's status as a jurisdic- tion of excellence. Some of the changes include new consumer protection measures as well as the simplification in the licens- ing structure from the current model to a Business to Business (B2B) and Business to Consum- er (B2C) framework. This will eliminate duplication of checks and speed up time to market for the operators. Speaking at the inauguration, Parliamentary Secretary for Competitiveness and Economic Growth Jose' Herrera praised the MGA for another milestone in its success story. "The new offices are equipped with the latest technology so that the Authority will be able to con- tinue to deliver positive results as ref lected in the interim per- formance report published just a few weeks ago. The gaming in- dustry contributes substantially to Malta's GDP and it is in our interest to sustain this sector." In his closing address, Muscat praised the MGA for having put in place a strategy that empha- sises innovation and diversity in order to continue attracting investors to Malta. Muscat con- cluded by applauding the role of a transparent and business friendly Authority which is con- tinually reviewing its processes in order to be better equipped to deal with the ever-changing en- vironment that surrounds this dynamic sector. The opening ceremony ended with a guided tour of the prem- ises. Brand manager Anna Skus- iewicz said, "We believe in the power of the individual, and in the power of that individual to achieve any personal aim that he or she aspires to. Our spon- sorship of the Malta Marathon is based very much on this be- lief, since this event represents a life-long goal for so many people who train morning and evening to achieve it." The Vodafone Malta Mara- thon continues to grow year from year. This can be seen in the number of registrations which have i n c r e a s e d a n n u a l l y and which for the s e c o n d c o n s e c u - tive year exceeds the four thousand mark. Skusiewicz went over the arrangements put in place to make sure par- ticipants get the most from their experience. "Once again this year, in col- laboration with Fitness who sponsored the development of the app, we will once again be offering the Shvoong app to all participants. As you might be aware this facility offers all runners the option of having their photograph taken at all the strategic points along the Marathon route, with these images being uploaded within minutes to the individual's Fa- cebook timeline. "I am sure that these images will provide a treasured mem- ory for all participants after the event, allowing them to relive the race long after it has passed. It will also allow their family and friends to feel truly connected to the event, since they will be able to follow their progress on a minute-by-min- ute basis." Besides these images, this year the app also provides a new feature, where the partici- pants have the option to sub- scribe to have useful data such as the time elapsed from the start of the race, the distance reached, the runner's average speed as well as the runner's actual location visualised on a route map. "Vodafone can offer this fa- cility because, as Malta's lead- ing mobile operator with the only 4G network that offers full n a t i o n - wide cov- e r a g e , we can rely on the ex- c e l l e n t s p e e d p r o v i d e d by this network to ensure the fast and effec- tive transfer of such a high volume of data," Skusie- wicz said. Once again this year par- ticipants may register for the Marathon at Vodafone Des- tination Store in Birkirkara, where they can also register for the Shvoong app. Staff will be on hand to assist them in this process and to explain ex- actly how the app works. "On the day of the marathon itself, we would like to invite people to join the fun and sup- port the runners at the Sliema finishline where we will be distributing free merchandise from our Vodafone stand to cheer and celebrate together with the runners their achieve- ment," Skusiewicz added.
