On their part, the Lions suf- fered their second successive drubbing after also conceding eight goals against champions Hibernians in their last outing. Despite their dominance, Balzan had to wait until the 37th minute to break the deadlock when Alfred Effiong's swerving shot beat Naxxar keeper Luke Pecorella. Just before the break, Pecorella was sent off after bringing Ef- fiong down in the box. From the spot, Pedro dos Santos Cal- cado made no mistake to score Balzan's second past substitute goalkeeper Alberto Gallinetta. As the game resumed, a de- moralized Naxxar offered lit- tle resistance and it only took Balzan three minutes to score a third and secure the three points. Justin Grioli served Bojan Kaljevic who passed the ball back for Lydon Micallef who hit a low shot past the unlucky Gal- linetta. Aleksandar Vujacic scored Balzan's fourth on the 61st min- ute from close range following an assist by Pedro Calcado. One minute later, Malta striker Effiong's powerful shot from the edge of the area made it 5-0. Lydon Micallef scored a sixth goal on the 69th minutes when he rounded Gallinetta and drib- bled past a defender before plac- ing the ball at the back of the net. Vujacic piled more misery on Naxxar on the 74th when he beat Gallinetta after being served by Elkin Serrano. Three minutes later, Lydon Micallef scored his third goal and Balzan's eighth as he tapped the ball home after an assist by Vujacic.
