maltatoday, SUNDAY, 28 MAY 2017 50 This Week Homage to Buonamico in latest Maltese Studies journal XTRUPPAW are back with another themed concert as per usual – this time appropriately revolving around election season. Following their latest album re- lease, Xtruppozitorju, and a concert at the Farsons Great Beer Festival in 2015 – this year's gig will be held at the same place, but during the highly-anticipated Earth Garden at Ta' Qali National Park. Promo of the event has taken the form of a fully-fledged mock political cam- paign just in time for the snap general election, complete with a party name, logo, and professional photoshoot. The concert will kick off on Thursday 1st June at 22:45. 1-day ticket passes can be purchased online for €15, which grants access to all areas and concerts for 1 day but excludes the camping site. Xtruppaw are a satirical Maltese band who play an eclectic mixture of different genres including punk, ska, 80s, Maltese Ghana and more. They first debuted during Festahwid in June 2005, and the unique style was met with general ac- claim. The song 'Diska Cool Ghar-Radio' has been played by a live orchestra dur- ing the Pantomime at the Manoel Thea- tre. THE Department of Maltese at the University of Malta will be launch- ing its 29th issue of the Journal of Maltese Studies on the 30th May. This monographic issue is dedi- cated to Giovanni Francesco Buonamico, the Maltese seven- teenth-century intellectual mainly remembered as the author of the second oldest poem in Maltese, "Mejju ġie bil-ward u ż-żahar". However, this solitary poem in Maltese by Buonamico can hardly be said to do justice to his r e m a r k a b l y broad range of interests. And yet, apart from a p i o n e e r i n g study in 1971 by Giovanni M a n g i o n , very little has been written about this seventeenth- century poly- math up to the present publication. The aim of this publi- cation is to shed further light on the multifaceted scholarly ac- tivity of this Maltese doc- tor, an undertaking that could not have been attempted without the generous offer of Judge Giovanni Bonello to put at the disposal of different scholars the substantial collection of unstudied Buonami- co manuscripts, bound in one vol- ume, in his possession. This issue of the Journal of Maltese Studies, therefore, also commemorates the first time that different scholars have gained access to rare Buon- amico manuscripts, complement- ing previously known and accessed material by the same author. The issue, edited by Giovanni Bonello, Arnold Cassola and Bernard Micallef, consists of ten academic studies hailing form different disciplines, such as Ba- roque poetry, philology, seven- teenth-century travel, and botany (amongst other fields probed personally by Buonamico during his relatively short life). Of ma- jor interest to readers owning a copy of this issue of the Journal of Maltese Studies will be the digital version of the collection of Bou- namico manuscripts itself, offered by Judge Bonello to form part of this publication. Buyers of this is- sue of the JMS will thus have free access to manuscripts that have to date been preserved as a private collection. The launching will take place at the Library of the Faculty of Arts at 6.pm.
