54 maltatoday, SUNDAY, 28 MAY 2017 Events On Saturday 13 May, Flair, a JAYE Company won the cov- eted Company of the Year award at the annual HSBC Company Programme Finals and Awards ceremony presented by Junior Achievement Young Enterprise Malta Foundation at the Grand Master's Suite, Hilton Portomaso in St Julian's. Flair will now represent Malta at the JA Europe Company of the Year Finals where they will com- pete with forty other youth-led mini-companies in Brussels be- tween the 11 and 13 July. The Finals and Awards cer- emony rewards participants from post-secondary schools for their efforts during the seven-month programme that immerses par- ticipants in the world of business through the setting-up of their own mini-company, where they raise share capital, launch and market their idea, and distribute dividends. This year 16 teams from 24th December Libyan School, De La Salle College, G. F. Abela Junior College, Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School, M. A. Refalo Sixth Form in Gozo, MCAST Institute of Business and Com- merce, St. Aloysius College, St. Martin's College, and Verdala In- ternational School participated. Throughout the programme the JAYE Companies were judged at various stages and apart from competing for the title of HSBC Company of the Year, they were also assessed on different busi- ness principles vying for the 8 signature awards generously sponsored by a number of lead- ing local and international cor- porations. Flair's A-Cards won them the HSBC Company of the Year Award for aiding students in ad- vancing their formal education through the use of flashcards. First runners-up were Charge who self-designed and 3-D print- ed a range of mobile and tablet ca- ble protectors called Cable Aids. Second runners-up were Metric with their product Jarful, a youth oriented series of recycled jars filled with handy necessities for a night in with friends, study pe- riods and remembering precious memories. Separately from these awards, Mr David Pace was also recog- nised with the John Harper Award by the Chairperson and Board Members for continuous commit- ment and contribution towards the organisation. During the ceremony a number of paid summer internships were awarded to participants who ex- celled in particular fields. On pre- senting the awards, both HSBC Bank Malta and Deloitte Malta emphasised the value of hands- on, experiential learning offered to youth through the JAYE Com- pany Programme in preparation for 'life after school'. As Main Corporate and Pro- gramme sponsors respectively, in- dustry support to such initiatives are crucial to the development of a work force that is capable of addressing the needs of a mod- ern economy. The selected stu- dents for the HSBC internships were Martina Grech from De La Salle College, Carla Cassano from MCAST, Therese Dimech G. F. Abela Junior College, Diandra At- tard and Luke Bezzina, both from St Aloysius' College, and Jiawen Shi from Verdala International School; the selected students chosen for the Deloitte intern- ships were Anthea Schembri from Gravity, and Mikela Camilleri from Millennial, both from De La Salle College. By encouraging students aged 16 to 19 to run their own compa- nies, the Company Programme not only gives them valuable experience but also brings out skills which will serve them well in their future working life; these include development of personal skills, team spirit, knowledge and understanding of how businesses function, together with the re- sponsibility to persevere in the face of adversity and unexpected challenges. Many alumni of this programme have taken stock of lessons learnt and continued their careers to set up their own busi- ness as a result of their involve- ment with the organisation. Learning by doing is the princi- pal by which all students should develop their careers and is the main focus of JAYE Malta. The organisation offers several pro- grammes starting at Primary and ending at Tertiary level. This, based on a progression model, helps students with their career development beyond the tradi- tional textbook and schoolroom education by facing real-life work- ing situations which few experi- ence outside this programme.
