This result puts Naxxar second from the bottom of the standings, now having suffered three consec- utive defeats. The match could not have started better for Naxxar as they managed to take the lead just after nine min- utes of play. Off a corner by Daren Falzon, Andrew Scicluna headed the ball past goalkeeper Tyrone Gauci to give Naxxar the lead. Naxxar managed to hold on to the lead until the end of the first half. But the lead did not last long in the second half as Floriana were awarded a penalty just after nine minutes of play into the resump- tion. Angus Buhagiar had brought down Mauricio Villa inside the ar- ea. The referee immediately point- ed to the penalty spot, from where Mario Fontanella easily beat goal- keeper Julian Azzopardi to make the score 1-1. Floriana started to gain confi- dence as they pressed for the lead and their chances grew when Naxxar were reduced to ten men on the 76th minute, after captain Angus Buhagiar was shown his second yellow card for pulling Mat- teo Picciollo. Floriana managed to break down Naxxar on the 84th minute when they scored to make it 2-1. Off a corner by Nicolas Chiesa, the ball was deflected in the direc- tion of Mauricio Villa who then easily beat Naxxar's goalkeeper from close range. Hibernians had to work hard for their victory as they played with 10 men for most of the match. Tarxien Rainbows will regret missing scoring opportunities in a match which should have seen them get a good result after play- ing against a team that was one man short. Just after six minutes of play, a red card was already shown. Luke Montebello advanced into the area and was brought down by Hibernians goalkeeper Jurgen Borg. The referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot. The Hibernians coach took off striker Jorge da Silva Pereira and put in substitute goalkeeper Rudy Brif- fa. From the penalty spot, Ayrton Azzopardi had his shot go wide. The score remained 0-0. In the second half, Hibernians looked to be the better side even if they were a man down. Hibernians managed to break the deadlock on the 54th minute. Off a corner by Clayton Failla, Andrew Cohen beat goalkeeper Andrea Cassar with his shot from close range. Six minutes later, Hibernians doubled the score. A freekick by Clayton Failla was headed past Tarxien's goalkeeper to make the score 2-0. Hibernians protected their lead for the remainder of the match with Tarxien Rainbows creating very few chances.
