maltatoday, SUNDAY, 10 APRIL 2016 41 This Week American jazz with a dash of Russian lyricism ENGLISH pianist, organist, and conductor Wayne Marshall will be taking on the demanding role of both conductor and soloist in the first of a series of three piano con- certos. This Malta Philharmonic Orchestra event will be held at the Manoel Theatre on April 15. The two works to feature in this concert are Gershwin's Piano Con- certo in F and Alexander Borodin's Symphony No. 2. The former is a 20th century composition in the typical classical form with three movements, containing a mélange of bombastic timpani sounds, piano and orchestral lyricism, Charleston and blues. The 19th century, Rus- sian, Borodin piece comprises four movements, having a declamatory opening on the tutti, and melodic re- semblances to his two operas, Prince Igor and Mlada. Marshall per- forms worldwide, but keeps Malta as his base. He is known for his virtuos- ic interpretation of works by George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, Duke Ellington and other 20th century American composers. Having acted as both conductor and soloist on a number of occasions, particularly in the performance of Gershwin pieces, Marshall is very accustomed to this kind of set-up. Audiences can look forward to another two piano concertos in this series: one that will feature Michael Laus as conductor and soloist on May 6, and the third with conductor Kaspar Zehnder, and Natacha Chircop and Marco Ri- voltini as soloists on May 27. The concert starts at 8pm. Tickets from €10 to €30. For bookings, log on to www.teatrumanoel.com.mt, email bookings@teatrumanoel.com.mt or phone on 2124 6389. 'Decomposed' is performed by Classic Mayhem and is a brilliantly moving play told in a very silly way. This family show takes the audience on a journey through classical music with the odd operatic outburst. The Stage review stated that, 'Comedy and classical music rarely marry up, but Classical Mayhem's sixty min- utes of quick-fire hilarity set to ex- tracts from great composers makes for a perfect union. As highly enter- taining as it is original'. The show has sold out wherever it has played. It features identical twins and a soundtrack of great classical music recorded by the world-class London Symphony Orchestra, Fate has deemed fit to reunite dysfunc- tional twins: Will, a failing orchestral conductor and control freak, and Ig- or his smelly doppelgänger. In close proximity after ten years, the com- bination of their polar personalities spells trouble. Can Will overcome his own ego and turn his life around to save his brother from turning into a total gaming freak? Written by Roly Taylor and Tim Armstrong-Taylor with Chris Larn- er and directed by Chris Larner with material from Cal McCrystal (One Man, Two Guvnors), this show is suitable for everyone aged 8+ (but you don't have to bring a child!). It's a kids' show for adults and a grown- up show for kids. Tickets for the show are €7 per child and €10 per adult. Book- ings: www.teatrumanoel.com.mt, booknigs@teatrumanoel.com.mt, 2124 6389
