MSPCA pushes for animal welfare laws to be enforced THE Malta Society for the Pro- tection and Care of Animals (MSPCA) has many a time ap- plauded the improvement of laws that protect the welfare of animals. The Animal Welfare Act of 2002 with its numer- ous additions and amendments over the years, the Electronic Identification of Dogs regula- tions of 2012 and other regu- lations on the sale of animals and minimum standards for animal sanctuaries are primary examples of such upgrading, al- though there is always room for improvement. Following the case of the horse whipped in Maghtab, where a magistrate found that the man had good reason to whip it to "protect" a toddler, MSPCA is questioning the validity of such improved laws if their enforce- ment is mediocre at best. Now that a new case of a horse being whipped indiscriminately has arisen, just days ago, and this time in a public place, which in- dicates the sentiment that there should be no shame associated with causing distress to an ani- mal which is already in a com- promised situation, MSPCA hopes that the authorities will take this opportunity to enforce the laws and have justice for this innocent animal. MSPCA will be attending the protest against animal cruelty held on the 17 April in St Ju- lian's and invites the public to do the same to show their dis- may at such cruel treatment of animals. GasanMamo Insurance lends a helping hand to Puttinu GASANMAMO Insurance is con- stantly supporting great causes! As part of their on-going efforts to en- rich the community, the company lent a helping hand in the thirteenth edition of the Puttinu Cares Good Friday walk, which took place on Friday 25 March 2016. A group of dedicated employees also partici- pated in the walk. It was once again an early start for this year's participants, who com- menced the annual walk to Senglea, from Misraħ iz-Zjara tal-Papa in Mellieħa at 2:00am. Participants covered thirty kilometres of ground in approximately four hours. Water stations dotted the route, and re- freshments were made available to give participants a well-needed en- ergy boost throughout the journey. Upon completion of the walk, each participant received a certificate of participation. Last year 10,000 peo- ple took part in the charity walk, raising a staggering €101,000 for Puttinu Cares. The Puttinu Cares Cancer sup- port group was set up in 2002. This group offers a holistic approach of care giving for families with chil- dren suffering from cancer. Gasan- Mamo once again gave their sup- port in this charity event, which aligns with the company's philoso- phy of corporate social responsibil- ity towards the wider community, by providing quality care for cancer stricken children, and support for their families.
